you could get a good deal on the 2012 Ford Escape since next year will be redesigned.
The Mazda CX9 has been rated the best for years. If you want a small one I like the new Kia one or the new Mazda one.
The Honda CR-V would be a great choice. You can probably still get a great deal on a 2011 model. Amazing fuel efficiency, good comfort, and lots of feature. One downside is a noisy 4 cylinder engine.

take a very close look at the Suburu Forester, #1 rate for quality and easy on fuel. a real looker too.
sportage is a good one, its cheap with good toys in the car too.
If someone asked me which suv i would get i would definitely tell them to get the Infiniti QX56 it costs around 60 grand, however it has a v8 engine and has 400 horsepower!! Overall its a really solid suv.
